Functional Testing
Operating the equipment through its full sequence to confirm every part behaves correctly together.
Injection testing proves the protection logic. Functional testing proves the whole assembly: the mechanism actually opens and closes, the control commands it correctly, the indication reports what really happened, and the auxiliary systems support all of it.
Individually correct components can still combine into an installation that does not work.
What functional testing covers
- Open and close operation through the control
- Local and remote operation verification
- Status indication accuracy against actual mechanism position
- Reclose sequence execution end to end
- Lockout behaviour and reset
- Auxiliary supply and battery backup operation
- Alarm and event reporting verification
What matters in practice

Indication has to match reality
A control system reporting closed while the mechanism is open is worse than no indication at all, because operators act on it.

Battery backup gets tested
The control is specified to run up to 48 hours without auxiliary supply. That is worth confirming while a technician is on site.

Remote operation before handover
If the installation is meant to be remotely operable, that gets proven during commissioning rather than discovered later.

Timing against specification
Closing and opening times are specified by model, and measured operation is checked against them.
