Protection Relay Testing

Protection relay testing proves the settings actually do what they are supposed to, rather than assuming a configured relay is a working one. We configure and test relay protection on recloser systems.

The protection relay is what makes a recloser a protective device rather than a switch. Its settings determine which faults it responds to, how fast, and how many times it attempts to reclose before locking out.

We configure and test relay protection on the RC5_4 control, and on other platforms where the installation calls for it.

What relay configuration and testing covers

  • Overcurrent pickup and time settings
  • Curve selection matched to the feeder and coordination requirements
  • Earth fault and sensitive earth fault configuration
  • Reclose sequence and lockout configuration
  • Cold load pickup and inrush restraint where required
  • Verification of every configured element by injection
  • Settings record issued with the commissioning documentation

What matters in practice

  • Settings come from the network

    Protection settings are derived from the feeder, the fault levels and the devices around this one. A default settings file is a starting point, not an answer.

  • The reclose sequence is a decision

    The reclosers we supply operate on an O-0.1s-CO-2s-CO-2s-CO sequence as standard. Whether that suits your feeder depends on the loads on it.

  • Sensitive earth fault needs care

    SEF settings that are too sensitive cause nuisance operations, too coarse and high-impedance faults are never detected.

  • Every element gets proven

    Configuring an element and testing an element are separate steps. Both happen before handover.
