Scheduled checks that find problems before they become outages.
Reclosers are built to sit outdoors for decades and operate correctly the one time it matters. That only holds if someone checks them between those moments.
Routine inspection is the cheapest maintenance there is, because everything it finds is something that had not yet failed.
What a routine inspection covers
- Mechanical condition of the switching module and mounting
- Termination condition and signs of thermal damage
- Earthing and bonding integrity
- Control cabinet sealing and internal condition
- Backup battery condition and expected remaining life
- Operating and fault record review
- Corrosion, UV degradation and physical damage assessment
What matters in practice

Battery is the usual finding
Backup battery capacity falls with age and temperature. Expected life ranges from roughly ten years at 20 degrees to under three at 40. An unchecked battery is the most common single point of failure.

Records tell you what happened
Reviewing operating records shows how often the device has actually operated, which is frequently more than anyone expected.

Thermal signs
Discolouration at a termination is a warning that appears well before the failure it predicts.

Seals degrade
Enclosure sealing degrades under UV and thermal cycling. Water ingress found during inspection is a repair, not a replacement.
